If you love the blues (and we at COASTE most definitely do), you’ll want to grab your tickets now for the exciting coming of blues legend Buddy Guy who’s teaming with once blues-boy-wonder Jonny Lang for an evening that will rock the house at Barbara B. Mann Theatre in Fort Myers on Sunday, February 16 at 7.30 pm.
Buddy Guy, as many know, is a true pioneer of the blues who ranks with B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Leadbelly, Sonny Boy Williamson and countless more legendary musicians — most notably, the “father” of the blues Robert Johnson — and has helped create this most native of American music genres. Born out of slavery and field hollers, the blues as first founded by African American artists has influenced generations of musicians to follow and can claim “offspring rights” to rock and roll — from Elvis, the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin to today’s blues-influenced stars including the Black Keys and Jack White. Mr. Guy has been named by Rolling Stone as among the top 25 guitarists of all time, and in 2012 received the Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime contributions to American culture.
By contrast, Jonny Lang is a farm boy from Fargo, North Dakota who recorded his first blues album at the age of 13, and achieved breakout commercial and critical success at the ripe young age of 16 with his first major label debut album Lie to Me. Now 32 years old with an exciting new album just recently, Lang combines musical chops with a powerful, soulful voice to create a unique blues-rock mashup that’s both timeless and contemporary.
